On 8th June, LARA lab and the Language, Learning and Cognition lab joined forces to host a day of talks on the topic of morphology in reading. Professor Julia Carroll and Dr Helen Breadmore visited from Coventry University and both gave fantastic talks presenting data from the Coventry and Warwick Morphology and Phonology Project. Professor Carroll focused on comparing morphological and phonological skills in children with dyslexia and children with otitis media, while Dr Breadmore presented research investigating how children with dyslexia and children with otitis media use morphology in their literacy and spelling. Professor Kathy Rastle from the Language, Learning and Cognition lab at Royal Holloway also talked about her research looking at the role of morphology in skilled reading, and Nicky Dawson from the LARA lab presented her cross-sectional findings on the process of morphological decomposition in visual word recognition. The talks stimulated much discussion and debate about the nature of morphology and its role in education. Thank you very much to Julia and Helen for taking the time to visit us.
